EGR at Ashlar India: Intraday Available, Delivery Coming Soon

Please read this before you place an EGR order. It answers the question most clients ask us.

Intraday Trading

Available Now

You can buy and sell EGR on NSE within the same trading day through your Ashlar India account. All intraday positions must be squared off before market close.

Delivery (Hold in Demat)

Not Available Yet

Buying EGR to hold in your Demat account, and requesting physical gold, is not available at the moment. As soon as delivery is enabled, we will make it available in your Ashlar India Demat account.

No need to call or follow up. When EGR delivery goes live, we will inform all clients by SMS and email, and it will be enabled in your existing account.

Gold has always held a special place in Indian households. We gift it at weddings. We buy it on Dhanteras. We pass it down across generations. In India, gold is not merely a metal — it represents trust, security, and tradition accumulated over centuries.

But investing in physical gold has always come with challenges. Making charges erode your investment value. Safe storage adds cost and anxiety. Verifying purity requires expertise. And selling at a fair price is rarely straightforward.

What if you could own 100% pure, 24-karat gold — without any of these drawbacks? That is precisely what the Electronic Gold Receipt (EGR) makes possible.

Introduced by SEBI and available for trading on NSE, the EGR is a regulated, exchange-traded gold instrument — transparent, certified, and held securely in your Demat account. No jewellery overheads. No home locker risk. No purity concerns.

With Ashlar India — a SEBI-registered NSE member broker — you can currently trade EGR on an intraday basis on NSE. Delivery-based EGR (buying and holding units in your Demat account) is not yet available; we will enable it for all clients as soon as it becomes available.

What Is EGR

What Is an Electronic Gold Receipt (EGR)?

An Electronic Gold Receipt (EGR) is a financial instrument issued under SEBI's EGR framework that represents ownership of physical gold stored in a SEBI-approved and regulated vault.

When you purchase one EGR unit, you are acquiring actual gold — certified 99.9% pure (24 karat) — stored securely in a regulated vault on your behalf. The EGR itself is held electronically in your Demat account at CDSL or NSDL, just as you would hold shares of a listed company.

A Simple Way to Understand It

Consider depositing ₹1 lakh in a bank. The bank issues you a Fixed Deposit receipt — a paper certificate. You do not carry the actual cash, but the money is yours, it is secure, and you can access it at maturity.

EGR works in the same way — but the underlying asset is gold rather than cash.

You purchase gold. It is stored in a SEBI-approved, insured vault. You receive an electronic receipt in your Demat account. You can hold it, sell it on NSE at the live market price, or — if you choose — request physical delivery of the gold itself.

Why Invest in EGR

Benefits of Investing in EGR (Electronic Gold Receipt)

Here is why EGR is one of the most accessible and regulated forms of gold investment available in India.

01

100% Pure 24K Gold — Certified and Guaranteed

Every EGR unit is backed by 99.9% pure gold stored in a SEBI-approved, insured vault. Purity is independently certified — there is no risk of adulteration, substandard alloys, or misrepresentation.

02

No Making Charges — Ever

When you purchase gold jewellery, making charges of 8–25% of the total price go to the jeweller — an irrecoverable cost when you sell. With EGR, you pay only for the gold. Zero making charges. Every rupee you invest represents actual gold value.

03

No Storage Risk or Cost

Your gold is held in a professionally managed, insured, SEBI-approved vault. You do not need a home locker, a bank locker (which incurs annual rental), or the anxiety of storing physical gold securely.

04

Invest in as Little as 1 Gram

EGR is available in units as small as 1 gram — making it accessible to a wide range of investors, including students and first-time buyers. You do not need to purchase a 10 gram coin or a 100 gram bar to get started.

05

Sell Instantly at Live NSE Market Prices

EGR trades on NSE during market hours at live, publicly quoted prices. When you decide to sell, you receive the current market price — no negotiation with a jeweller, no arbitrary discounts applied at the point of sale.

06

Physical Delivery Option (Coming Soon at Ashlar India)

Under SEBI's framework, EGR units can be converted into certified physical gold from the vault. At Ashlar India this option will be available once EGR delivery is enabled — currently EGR is available for intraday trading only.

07

Demat Holding (Coming Soon at Ashlar India)

Once delivery is enabled, your EGR units will sit in your CDSL or NSDL Demat account alongside your equity holdings — regulated by SEBI, with no private platform risk. Until then, EGR is available at Ashlar India for intraday trading.

08

Portfolio Diversification — A Natural Hedge

Gold has historically served as a store of value and tends to hold or increase in value during periods of equity market stress. Adding EGR to your investment portfolio provides a regulated, liquid hedge against equity market volatility.

09

Structured Tax Treatment

EGR gains follow a defined tax framework. Gains on EGR units held for more than 24 months (as per applicable tax rules) may qualify as long-term capital gains. Tax provisions are subject to change — always consult a Chartered Accountant for your specific tax treatment and the most current applicable rules.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Investing in EGR

Avoid these common mistakes when trading EGR on NSE.

Mistake

Confusing EGR with Unregulated Digital Gold Platforms

How to Avoid

EGR is not the same as digital gold products sold through private fintech apps. Those are unregulated by SEBI, not exchange-traded, and carry private platform risk. EGR is a SEBI-regulated, NSE-listed instrument backed by physically vaulted gold. Know the difference before you invest.

Mistake

Ignoring the Gold Market Cycle

How to Avoid

Gold prices move through cycles, often rising during periods of global uncertainty and consolidating during risk-on phases. Do not purchase EGR expecting rapid short-term gains. Gold is best considered a medium-to-long-term store of value and portfolio diversifier. Invest consistently over time rather than in a single large lump sum at a market peak.

Mistake

Overlooking Brokerage and Transaction Costs for Small Purchases

How to Avoid

While EGR has no making charges, standard brokerage, exchange transaction charges, STT, and applicable taxes apply — as with all exchange-traded instruments. For very small purchases (1–2 grams), these transaction costs may have a proportionally larger impact on returns. Ashlar India's research and support teams can help you plan cost-effective EGR investment strategies.

Mistake

Forgetting to Account for GST

How to Avoid

GST is applicable on brokerage and transaction-related charges for EGR trades. This is standard across all exchange-traded instruments. Include GST in your total cost calculation when evaluating your investment.

Mistake

Placing a Delivery Order or Expecting Units in Your Demat

How to Avoid

At Ashlar India, EGR is currently available for intraday trading only. Always select the Intraday product type and square off your position on the same day. EGR units will not be credited to your Demat account until delivery is enabled.

Mistake

Trading Intraday Without a Stop-Loss

How to Avoid

Gold usually moves less than stocks within a day, but intraday positions can still go against you, and charges apply on both buy and sell. Use a stop-loss, size positions sensibly, and remember all positions must be closed before market close.

Reminder: EGR at Ashlar India is currently available for intraday trading only. Delivery will be enabled in your Demat account once available — we will notify you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about EGR — and how to get started with gold investment on NSE through Ashlar India.

Not yet. At present, EGR is available at Ashlar India for intraday trading only. Delivery-based EGR (holding units in your Demat account) will be enabled as soon as it becomes available, and we will inform all clients by SMS and email.

Yes. You can buy and sell EGR on NSE within the same trading day by selecting the Intraday product type. All intraday EGR positions must be squared off before market close.

For investment purposes, EGR offers significant advantages over jewellery. Jewellery carries making charges of 8–25%, purity uncertainty, storage risk, and selling complications. EGR is 24K certified, carries zero making charges, is stored safely in a regulated vault, and can be sold instantly at live NSE prices during market hours.

Under SEBI's EGR framework, units can be surrendered for certified physical gold from the vault, subject to minimum quantities and exchange/vault terms. At Ashlar India, this will be possible once EGR delivery is enabled — currently EGR is available for intraday trading only.

Yes. The EGR framework was introduced by SEBI in 2021 and EGR was subsequently launched for trading on NSE. All aspects of EGR issuance, vaulting, trading, and settlement are governed by SEBI's regulatory framework. This makes EGR one of the most transparent and regulated gold investment options available in India.

Yes. EGR is well-suited for investors who seek gold exposure without the complications of physical gold. It offers the security of SEBI-regulated, certified gold held in a professional vault, the convenience of digital holding and management, and the liquidity of exchange-traded sale at live prices during market hours.

Yes — once EGR delivery is enabled at Ashlar India, your EGR units will be held in the same CDSL or NSDL Demat account as your equity shares, ETFs, and bonds. No separate account will be needed.

There is no confirmed date yet. You do not need to call or submit any request — once delivery is available, it will be enabled in your existing Ashlar India account and we will notify you.

An EGR is a digital certificate issued under SEBI's regulatory framework that confirms ownership of a specific quantity of 99.9% pure gold stored in a SEBI-approved vault. It trades on NSE exactly like a listed stock — you can buy it, hold it in your Demat account, sell it at the live market price, or convert it to physical gold through the exchange's delivery mechanism.

The minimum EGR unit size is 1 gram of gold. The minimum investment amount therefore equals the current NSE market price of 1 gram of 99.9% pure gold — which varies based on prevailing gold prices. This structure makes EGR accessible to a broad range of investors.

Both EGR and Gold ETFs track the price of physical gold and are exchange-traded instruments regulated by SEBI. The primary distinction is that EGR provides the option of physical delivery — you can convert EGR units into actual gold — whereas Gold ETFs generally do not offer this facility.

Standard exchange brokerage, STT (Securities Transaction Tax), exchange transaction charges, and applicable GST apply — the same charge structure as equity trading. There are no making charges and no vault storage fees for holding EGR units. Ashlar India discloses the complete fee structure upfront.

EGR taxation is subject to the Income Tax Act and applicable SEBI/government guidelines, which may be revised. Tax treatment depends on the holding period and applicable rules at the time of sale. Always consult a Chartered Accountant or qualified tax advisor for personalised and current guidance on EGR tax treatment.
