How To Open a Demat Account

Investing Basics · Education

Fifteen minutes on your phone is all it takes to go from saver to investor. Here is exactly what happens between “Open Account” and your first share — and what to check before you tap it.

The Account Opening Journey You start First trade eKYC Aadhaar OTP verification The heart of the paperless process Form + OTP PAN check Bank + IPV eSign Form-fill takes about 15 minutes — activation typically follows within 24–48 working hours
The complete paperless flow: mobile & email OTP → PAN verification → Aadhaar eKYC → bank linking and digital IPV → eSign → activation.

Every month, lakhs of Indians open their first demat account online. Some are students who want to start early with small amounts. Some are salaried employees planning long-term equity investment for retirement. Some are business owners who want to apply for an IPO or park surplus funds in mutual funds. Whatever your reason, the journey begins at the same place: learning how to open demat account the right way.

The good news? The demat account opening process in India is now almost fully digital. With paperless KYC, Aadhaar OTP verification and PAN verification, most investors can open a demat account from their phone in under 15 minutes — no branch visits, no couriered forms.

This guide walks you through the complete steps: eligibility, documents required for demat account opening, charges, timelines, security tips, and how to buy your first share after activation. It is written for beginners in the stock market, but even experienced investors switching brokers will find the checklists useful.

What is a Demat Account?

A demat account (short for dematerialised account) is an electronic account that holds your shares and securities in digital form, just like a bank account holds your money. It is maintained with one of India’s two depositories — NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) or CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited) — through a Depository Participant (DP) such as a SEBI registered stock broker.

Before 1996, shares in India existed as physical paper certificates. Investors faced torn certificates, forged signatures, postal delays and lengthy transfer procedures. The Depositories Act, 1996 changed this by allowing electronic shares. Today, SEBI mandates that shares of listed companies be traded in dematerialised form on stock exchanges like the NSE and BSE.

  • Bank account → holds money
  • Demat account → holds shares, bonds, ETFs, mutual fund units and government securities
  • Trading account → the bridge you use to buy and sell on the stock exchange

When you buy shares through your online trading account, they are credited to your demat account (typically on a T+1 settlement basis). When you sell, they are debited from it.

Why Do You Need a Demat Account?

You cannot buy or sell shares on Indian stock exchanges without one. A demat account is legally required if you want to:

  • Invest in shares listed on NSE or BSE
  • Apply for an IPO — allotted shares are credited only to a demat account
  • Hold ETFs, bonds, government securities and sovereign gold bonds
  • Pledge securities to get margin for trading
  • Receive dividends, bonus shares and stock splits directly and automatically
💡 A real-world trigger: Ramesh, a 27-year-old salaried employee in Gurugram, wanted to apply for a popular IPO in 2025. He had a bank account and UPI — but no demat account, so he could not apply. He opened one in two days and applied through UPI IPO the same week. This is one of the most common reasons first-time investors open an account.

Who Can Open a Demat Account? Eligibility Criteria

  • Resident Indian individuals aged 18 or above with a valid PAN
  • Minors — through a guardian-operated account (guardian’s KYC applies)
  • NRIs — under RBI/FEMA guidelines with NRE or NRO linkage
  • HUFs, partnership firms, LLPs, companies and trusts — via non-individual account categories

There is no minimum income requirement for an equity delivery account. Income proof is required only if you want to trade in derivatives (Futures & Options), currency or commodities.

Documents Required for Demat Account

Keep clear soft copies of these ready before you begin the demat account KYC process:

DocumentPurposeMandatory?
PAN cardIdentity + tax identification, verified live against the Income Tax databaseYes — no exceptions
Aadhaar cardAddress proof + eKYC via OTP (must be linked to your mobile)Yes, for paperless eKYC
Bank proofCancelled cheque, statement or passbook page showing name, account number and IFSCYes
SignatureScanned signature on white paper, blue/black inkYes
PhotographLive selfie captured during digital IPVYes
Income proofSalary slip, Form 16, 6-month bank statement or ITR acknowledgementOnly for F&O, currency & commodity
💡 Can I open a demat account without income proof? Yes. Income proof is not required for an equity delivery (cash segment) account. It is needed only when you activate derivatives, currency or commodity segments, as per exchange regulations.

Step-by-Step Demat Account Opening Process

  1. Choose a SEBI registered broker. Verify the SEBI registration number, exchange memberships (NSE/BSE/MCX) and depository registration (NSDL/CDSL) — these must be displayed on the broker’s website, and you can cross-check them on SEBI’s official site.
  2. Start online registration. Enter your mobile number and email ID; both are verified instantly through OTPs. Ideally use the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
  3. PAN verification. Enter PAN and date of birth; the system verifies them in real time against Income Tax records. Your name must match exactly across PAN, Aadhaar and bank records.
  4. Aadhaar OTP verification (eKYC). Through the DigiLocker/UIDAI flow, confirm with an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. Name, address, date of birth and photo are fetched digitally.
  5. Fill personal & financial details. Occupation, income range, trading experience — and choose your segments (equity only, or plus F&O/currency/commodity).
  6. Bank account linking. Enter your account number and IFSC, upload a cancelled cheque or statement. Some brokers verify with a ₹1 penny-drop credit.
  7. In-person verification (IPV). Record a short selfie video or live photo — SEBI’s IPV requirement, done fully digitally.
  8. Upload signature & documents. Sign on plain white paper, photograph and upload. Add income proof if you opted for derivatives.
  9. eSign the application. Review the account opening form, rights & obligations, tariff sheet and risk disclosures — then digitally sign everything with another Aadhaar OTP.
  10. Account activation. After verification you receive your Client ID and 16-digit demat (BO) ID — typically within 24–48 working hours.

Difference Between Demat Account and Trading Account

Many beginners use these terms interchangeably, but they serve different roles:

FeatureDemat accountTrading account
PurposeStores your securities electronicallyExecutes buy/sell orders on the exchange
Maintained byDepository (NSDL/CDSL) via a DPStock broker
Identifier16-digit BO IDUnique client/trading code
AnalogyLocker for your sharesCash counter where transactions happen
Needed for IPO?Yes — allotted shares land hereNeeded if you want to sell later
ChargesAMC, DP chargesBrokerage, transaction charges

In practice, brokers open a demat and trading account together as a “2-in-1”, because you need both to complete the invest–hold–sell cycle. A trading account is not legally compulsory if you only want to hold securities — for example, receiving ESOPs or IPO allotments — but you cannot sell on the exchange without one.

Demat Account Charges Explained

“Is demat account free?” is one of the most-searched questions. The honest answer: account opening is often free, but running the account involves certain charges. Understanding them protects you from surprises.

ChargeWhat it isTypical range*When charged
Account opening feeOne-time onboarding fee₹0 – ₹500 (often waived)At opening
AMCAnnual maintenance charge for the demat account₹0 – ₹750/year; NIL under BSDA up to ₹4 lakh holdingsYearly/quarterly
BrokerageFee per executed tradeFlat per-order or percentage-based, varies by planPer trade
DP chargesDepository + DP fee when shares leave your demat₹10 – ₹25 + GST per scripOn every sell (debit)
Pledge chargesFee for pledging shares as margin collateral₹20 – ₹50 + GST per scrip per requestOn pledge/unpledge
Call & tradePlacing orders via phone with a dealer₹20 – ₹50 per orderPer phone order
Statutory leviesSTT, exchange charges, SEBI fee, stamp duty, GSTFixed by regulationPer trade

*Ranges are indicative industry norms; refer to your broker’s published tariff sheet for exact rates. Statutory charges are set by the government and exchanges, not the broker.

💡 Expert Tip — BSDA: SEBI’s Basic Services Demat Account framework gives small investors zero AMC when the value of holdings is up to ₹4 lakh, and a capped AMC of ₹100 for holdings between ₹4 lakh and ₹10 lakh — provided it is your only demat account with you as sole holder. Ideal for beginners.

Things to Check Before Choosing a Broker

  • SEBI registration number and exchange membership codes displayed on the website — verified independently on sebi.gov.in
  • Depository partner — NSDL, CDSL, or both
  • Complete tariff sheet — AMC, brokerage, DP charges, pledge charges, published transparently
  • Trading platform quality — web + mobile app stability, charting, order types
  • Research and education support — especially useful for beginners
  • Customer support channels and a clear grievance escalation matrix
  • Investor complaints data — disclosed monthly on broker websites as per SEBI norms
  • Fund transfer options — UPI, net banking, payout timelines
⚠️ SEBI regulations prohibit brokers from guaranteeing returns or offering assured-profit schemes. If any entity promises “guaranteed monthly income” from the share market, treat it as a red flag and verify its registration on SEBI’s website before proceeding.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Mismatched details. A name spelled differently on PAN, Aadhaar and bank records is the #1 cause of application rejection.
  2. Using someone else’s bank account. The linked account must be in your own name.
  3. Ignoring the tariff sheet — eSigning the package without reading AMC and DP charges.
  4. Activating F&O without understanding it. Derivatives carry higher risk and need income proof for a reason.
  5. Uploading blurred documents — leads to re-submission and delays activation.
  6. Skipping nomination — creates transmission hassles for your family later.
  7. Sharing OTPs or passwords — even with callers claiming to be from the broker.
  8. Choosing a broker only on ads — verify registration and service quality instead.

Security Tips for Your Online Demat Account

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) — mandatory as per SEBI/exchange norms — and never disable it.
  • Never share your OTP, password or TPIN with anyone.
  • Shares can be debited only after CDSL TPIN / NSDL eDIS authorisation or a DDPI you have knowingly signed.
  • Check SMS and email alerts from NSDL/CDSL — depositories alert you directly on every debit.
  • Review your monthly CAS (Consolidated Account Statement) to spot anything unusual early.
  • Use only the official website/app; beware of look-alike phishing links.
  • Keep your registered email and mobile number updated; log out on shared devices.

How Long Does Demat Account Opening Take?

StageTypical time
Online form + eKYC + eSign10–20 minutes
Broker-side verification4–24 working hours
Account activation & credentialsWithin 24–48 working hours
Segment addition (F&O) later1–2 working days after income proof
First fund transfer & tradeSame day as activation

If documents are unclear or details mismatch, the timeline can stretch to 3–7 days due to re-verification. Weekends and market holidays are excluded.

Multiple Accounts, NRIs and Students

Can you open multiple demat accounts?

Yes. There is no legal limit, as long as each account is with a different broker/DP and your PAN is linked to all of them. Remember: each account may carry its own AMC, and BSDA benefits apply only to a single sole-holder account.

Can NRIs open a demat account?

Yes, under FEMA and RBI guidelines — via an NRE (repatriable) demat account linked to an NRE bank account under the Portfolio Investment Scheme where applicable, or an NRO (non-repatriable) account. NRIs need a passport, visa/OCI card and overseas address proof, and the process involves more documentation than resident eKYC.

Can students open a demat account?

Yes — this is one of the fastest-growing investor segments in India. Students aged 18+ can open a regular account with their own PAN and Aadhaar; no income proof is needed for equity delivery, so having no salary is not a barrier. Students below 18 can invest through a minor account operated by a parent/guardian, which converts to a regular account after they turn 18 and complete fresh KYC.

Nomination Process

SEBI has made it mandatory for demat account holders to either nominate a person or explicitly opt out of nomination. During online account opening you will see a nomination screen:

  1. Choose “I wish to nominate” or “I do not wish to nominate” (opt-out requires a declaration).
  2. Add nominees online and specify each nominee’s percentage share.
  3. Provide each nominee’s name, relationship, date of birth (with guardian details for minors) and an ID reference.
  4. Change or update nominees any time later, authenticated by OTP/eSign.
💡 Expert Tip: Always nominate. A registered nomination lets your family receive securities with minimal paperwork, avoiding lengthy legal-heir procedures.

Tax Implications of a Demat Account

Opening a demat account has no tax by itself, but the gains you make are taxable. As per the Income Tax rules currently in force:

Gain typeHolding period (listed equity/equity MF)Tax rate
Short-term capital gains (STCG)Sold within 12 months20% (Section 111A)
Long-term capital gains (LTCG)Held more than 12 months12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh per financial year (Section 112A)
DividendsTaxed at your slab rate; TDS as applicable

Securities Transaction Tax (STT) is deducted automatically on exchange trades, and capital gains must be reported in your Income Tax Return. Rates and thresholds can change with each Union Budget — verify current-year rules on the Income Tax Department website or with a tax professional. This section is general education, not tax advice.

How to Buy Your First Share

  1. Log in to the broker’s web platform or mobile trading app.
  2. Add funds from your linked bank account via UPI or net banking.
  3. Search the company you researched — start with businesses you understand.
  4. Choose order type — a market order executes at the current price; a limit order only at your chosen price.
  5. Select “Delivery” (CNC) so shares are credited to your demat account.
  6. Place the order and confirm with 2FA.
  7. Verify credit — shares reflect in your holdings as per settlement timelines.
💡 Expert Tip: For your first trade, buy a small quantity of a large, liquid company or an index ETF. The goal of trade #1 is to learn the process, not to maximise profit.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a demat account?

An electronic account that holds your shares, bonds, ETFs and mutual fund units in digital form with NSDL or CDSL, accessed through a Depository Participant such as a SEBI registered broker.

2. How do I open a demat account?

Choose a SEBI registered broker, fill the online form, verify PAN and Aadhaar via OTP, link your bank account, complete digital in-person verification, and eSign the application. Activation usually takes 24–48 working hours.

3. Can I open a demat account online?

Yes. The entire process — KYC, verification and eSign — is paperless if your Aadhaar is linked to your mobile number.

4. Which documents are required?

PAN card, Aadhaar card, bank proof (cancelled cheque/statement), scanned signature and a live photo. Income proof is needed only for derivatives.

5. Is Aadhaar mandatory?

Aadhaar is required for the instant paperless eKYC route. Without mobile-linked Aadhaar you can still open an account through offline KYC using other officially valid documents, but it takes longer.

6. Can students open a demat account?

Yes. Students aged 18+ can open one with PAN and Aadhaar; no income proof is needed for equity delivery. Minors can invest through a guardian-operated account.

7. What are demat account charges?

Account opening fee (often nil), annual maintenance charge (AMC), brokerage per trade, DP charges on sells, pledge charges, call & trade fees, and statutory levies like STT and stamp duty.

8. Is demat account free?

Opening is often free, and AMC is nil under SEBI’s BSDA framework for holdings up to ₹4 lakh (single sole-holder account). Transaction-linked charges still apply when you trade.

9. Can I have two demat accounts?

Yes, with different brokers/DPs. There is no legal limit, but each account may carry its own AMC, and BSDA benefits are lost if you hold multiple accounts.

10. Is a trading account compulsory?

Not legally — you can hold securities with only a demat account. But to buy or sell on NSE/BSE you need a trading account, so brokers open both together.

11. How long does approval take?

Typically 24–48 working hours after a clean application. Mismatched or blurred documents can extend this to 3–7 days.

12. Can I invest in an IPO with a demat account?

Yes — a demat account is mandatory for IPO applications, and allotted shares are credited directly to it. You can apply via UPI through your broker or bank ASBA.

13. What is CDSL?

Central Depository Services (India) Limited — one of India’s two SEBI-registered depositories that hold securities electronically.

14. What is NSDL?

National Securities Depository Limited — India’s first depository, established in 1996, which pioneered dematerialisation of shares.

15. NSDL vs CDSL — which is better?

Both are SEBI-regulated and functionally equivalent for retail investors. Your broker decides which depository it partners with; charges and safety are comparable.

16. Can I transfer shares between demat accounts?

Yes, through an off-market transfer using a DIS slip or the online Easiest (CDSL) / Speed-e (NSDL) facilities. Transfers between your own accounts have no tax implication.

17. What happens if I don’t use my account?

It stays active but may still attract AMC. Long-inactive accounts can be flagged dormant, requiring re-verification before transactions. You can close an unused account free of cost after clearing dues.

18. Is income proof required?

Only for activating derivatives (F&O), currency or commodity segments. Equity delivery accounts need no income proof.

19. Can NRIs open a demat account?

Yes, under FEMA/RBI rules, via NRE (repatriable) or NRO (non-repatriable) routes with additional documents like passport, visa/OCI and overseas address proof.

20. How secure is an online demat account?

Very secure when used correctly: SEBI-mandated 2FA, depository-level debit alerts, TPIN/eDIS authorisation for sells, and monthly CAS statements. Most frauds involve leaked OTPs — never share credentials.

21. Can I close my demat account?

Yes, anytime, by submitting a closure form after transferring or rematerialising holdings and clearing dues. Closure itself is free as per SEBI norms.

22. What is the minimum balance in a demat account?

There is none. A demat account holds securities, not money; it can remain empty without penalty (AMC may still apply).

23. Which broker should I choose?

A SEBI registered broker with transparent published charges, a stable trading platform, responsive support and verifiable regulatory credentials — never one promising assured profits.

24. How do I buy shares after opening my account?

Log in, add funds via UPI/net banking, search the stock, select a delivery (CNC) order at market or limit price, and confirm with 2FA. Shares are credited to your demat as per settlement.

Key Takeaways

  • A demat account holds securities electronically with NSDL/CDSL through a DP; a trading account executes orders — you need both to invest actively.
  • PAN and mobile-linked Aadhaar enable a fully paperless, ~15-minute application; activation usually takes 24–48 working hours.
  • Income proof is needed only for derivatives — not for equity delivery investing.
  • Know your charges: AMC, brokerage, DP charges, pledge charges and statutory levies. BSDA offers zero AMC up to ₹4 lakh for eligible small investors.
  • Nomination is mandatory to complete (nominate or opt out) — nominating is strongly advisable.
  • STCG on listed equity is taxed at 20%; LTCG at 12.5% beyond ₹1.25 lakh a year — subject to change by Budget.
  • Verify every broker’s SEBI registration independently before opening an account.

Conclusion

Learning how to open a demat account is the first practical step from being a saver to becoming an investor. The process in 2026 is simple: keep your PAN, Aadhaar and bank proof ready, choose a SEBI registered broker, complete paperless eKYC with Aadhaar OTP, eSign the form, and you are typically market-ready within 24–48 hours. Understand the charges, register a nominee, follow basic security hygiene, and begin with small, well-understood investments.

Demat Account

  • Bank account →

Step-by-Step Demat Account

  3. PAN verification।
  4. Aadhaar OTP verification (eKYC)।
  6. Bank account linking।
  7. In-person verification (IPV)।
  10. Account activation।

FeatureDemat accountTrading account
Stock broker
16-digit BO IDUnique client/trading code
ChargesAMC, DP chargesBrokerage, transaction charges

  • Website पर दिखाया गया SEBI registration number और exchange membership codes — sebi.gov.in पर स्वतंत्र रूप से verify करें
  • Depository partner — NSDL, CDSL,
  • Fund transfer विकल्प — UPI, net banking, payout timelines

Security Tips

  • Registered email और mobile number updated रखें; shared devices पर log out करें।

Demat Account

Online form + eKYC + eSign10–20
1–2 working days

Students

Nomination

  1. “I wish to nominate” या “I do not wish to nominate” चुनें (opt-out के लिए declaration चाहिए)।

  1. Broker के web platform या mobile trading app में log in करें
  2. Linked bank account से UPI या net banking द्वारा funds जोड़ें
