Best Discount Broker In India

Ten years ago, brokerage ate 0.5% of every trade. Today it’s a flat ₹20 — or nothing at all. Here’s everything you need to know before you choose who executes your trades.

Opening a discount trading account in India — fully online, from documents to your first trade.

Ten years ago, opening a trading account in India meant visiting a broker’s office, signing a thick stack of forms, and paying 0.3% to 0.5% of your trade value as brokerage — on both the buy and the sell side. On a ₹1 lakh trade, that could mean ₹500 to ₹1,000 gone before you made a single rupee of profit.

Today, you can open a demat account from your phone in minutes and pay a flat fee of ₹20 or less per order — sometimes nothing at all. That shift happened because of one type of broker: the discount broker.

If you have searched for the best discount broker in India, you have probably found dozens of listicles that repeat the same three names and a pricing table. This guide is different. By the end of it, you will understand:

  • Exactly what a discount broker is and how it makes money
  • Every charge on your contract note — brokerage, STT, GST, stamp duty, DP charges — explained in plain language
  • How to compare brokers honestly, using a framework instead of ads
  • Whether a discount broker is right for your trading style (it isn’t for everyone)
  • How to open a low brokerage trading account online, step by step

Whether you are a college student making your first SIP, a working professional building a long-term portfolio, or an active F&O trader placing fifty orders a day, this guide is written for you.

Let’s start with the basics.

What is a Discount Broker?

A discount broker is a SEBI-registered stockbroker that executes your buy and sell orders at a low, flat brokerage fee — typically ₹0 to ₹20 per order — instead of charging a percentage of your trade value. Discount brokers operate primarily online and usually do not provide personalised investment advice, which is how they keep costs low.

That definition is worth unpacking, because every word matters.

SEBI-registered. Every legitimate stockbroker in India — discount or full-service — must be registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and hold membership of the exchanges it operates on, such as the NSE, BSE, or MCX. A discount broker is not a “lesser” broker in regulatory terms. It follows the same compliance rules, the same investor protection norms, and the same audit requirements as any traditional broker. You can verify any broker’s registration number on the SEBI website or the exchange websites.

Flat brokerage. The defining feature. Instead of charging, say, 0.5% of trade value, a discount broker charges a fixed amount per executed order. Whether you trade ₹10,000 or ₹10 lakh, the brokerage stays the same. For active traders, this single difference can save lakhs of rupees a year.

Online-first. Discount brokers deliver everything — account opening, trading, fund transfers, reports — through web platforms and mobile apps. There is usually no relationship manager calling you with stock tips. You research, you decide, you trade.

Execution-only (mostly). The classic discount broking model is “execution-only”: the broker’s job is to place your order fast and accurately, not to tell you what to buy. Some modern discount brokers now bundle basic research, screeners, and educational content, but personalised advisory is not part of the core offering.

In India, the discount broking model took off after 2010 and accelerated dramatically after 2015, when smartphone penetration, Aadhaar-based eKYC, and UPI made fully digital investing practical. Today, discount brokers account for the majority of active retail clients on the NSE.

💡 Featured-snippet-ready definition: A discount broker in India is an online stockbroker that charges a low flat fee (usually ₹0–₹20 per order) to execute trades on exchanges like NSE and BSE, instead of the percentage-based commissions charged by traditional full-service brokers.

How Discount Brokers Work

To understand why discount brokers are cheap, you need to understand where a traditional broker’s costs come from — and what discount brokers eliminated.

The traditional cost structure

A full-service broker historically ran hundreds of branch offices, employed large teams of relationship managers, dealers, and research analysts, and processed paperwork physically. All of that overhead was recovered through percentage-based brokerage. The more you traded, the more you paid — even though executing a ₹10 lakh order costs the broker roughly the same as executing a ₹10,000 order.

What discount brokers changed

Discount brokers rebuilt the business around technology:

  1. Digital onboarding. Aadhaar-based eKYC, digital signatures, and online document upload replaced physical forms. Account opening that took days now takes minutes.
  2. Self-service platforms. Instead of calling a dealer to place an order, you tap a button on an app. One well-built platform serves millions of clients.
  3. No advisory payroll. By not offering personalised advice, discount brokers avoid the cost of large research and sales teams — and also avoid the conflict of interest where advisors push trades to generate commission.
  4. Flat, transparent pricing. Because the broker’s cost per order is fixed, the price to you can be fixed too.

How discount brokers make money

A fair question every investor should ask: if brokerage is ₹20 or even zero, how does the broker survive? Discount brokers earn from several streams:

Revenue StreamHow It Works
Flat brokerage on intraday & F&OThe core revenue. Active traders place many orders; small fees add up at scale.
Account maintenance charges (AMC)An annual fee for maintaining your demat account, typically ₹0–₹400.
Interest on fundsBrokers earn interest/float income on client funds and margin funding, within SEBI’s client-fund segregation rules.
Margin Trading Facility (MTF)Interest charged when clients borrow to buy stocks under SEBI’s MTF framework.
DP chargesA small fee (often ₹10–₹25 + GST) when shares are debited from your demat account on selling.
Value-added subscriptionsAdvanced tools, data feeds, API access, or premium plans.
Distribution incomeCommissions on products like insurance or corporate FDs, where offered and disclosed.

Understanding this matters for one practical reason: a broker that is “free” on the surface still earns from you somewhere. A transparent broker publishes its full charge sheet openly. Before opening an account with anyone, read their charges page and run a sample trade through their brokerage calculator.

What happens when you place an order

  1. You place a buy order on the broker’s app or web platform.
  2. The broker’s risk management system (RMS) checks your available funds/margin.
  3. The order is routed to the exchange (NSE/BSE/MCX) and matched with a seller.
  4. The exchange confirms execution; you see the fill in seconds.
  5. Clearing corporations settle the trade — since 2023, Indian equity markets settle on T+1, meaning shares arrive in your demat account (held with a depository, CDSL or NSDL) the next working day.
  6. You receive a contract note by email the same day, listing every charge on the trade. Always read it.

The broker is the pipeline, the exchange is the marketplace, and the depository is the vault. A discount broker simply runs that pipeline at the lowest possible cost.

Difference Between Discount Broker and Full-Service Broker

This is the most common comparison new investors search for, so let’s do it properly.

The real-world cost difference

Say you invest ₹50,000 per month in delivery stocks and rebalance once a quarter — a modest, realistic pattern for a salaried investor.

Discount Broker (₹20/order or free delivery)Full-Service Broker (0.3%)
Monthly buys (12/year)₹0–₹240/year₹1,800/year
Quarterly rebalancing (8 orders/year)₹0–₹160/year~₹1,200/year
Approximate annual brokerage₹0–₹400₹3,000+

Over 20 years of investing, and with the difference compounding if reinvested, the gap can quietly grow into several lakhs. Costs are one of the few things in the market you can actually control — which is why broker selection matters more than most beginners realise.

When full-service still wins

To be fair: if you genuinely rely on curated research, want someone to call before a big decision, need offline branch support, or use services like PMS and estate planning, a full-service broker earns its fees. The point is not that discount brokers are always better — it’s that you should not pay for services you don’t use.

Benefits of Choosing a Discount Broker

1. Dramatically lower trading costs

The headline benefit. Flat-fee pricing means your brokerage does not grow with your trade size. For traders, lower cost per trade directly improves the breakeven point — the amount a stock must move before you’re in profit.

2. Transparent, predictable pricing

With a flat fee, you know your cost before you place the order. No negotiating, no “special rates,” no surprises on the contract note. Transparency is itself a form of investor protection.

3. No commission-driven advice

A broker that earns a percentage of your turnover has an incentive to make you trade more. A flat-fee broker earns the same ₹20 whether you churn your portfolio or hold for a decade. Removing that conflict of interest is one of the most underrated benefits of the discount model.

4. Modern technology

Because discount brokers compete on platform quality rather than relationships, you get fast apps, advanced charting, real-time data, price alerts, screeners, and instant fund transfers via UPI.

5. Fully digital experience

Account opening with Aadhaar eKYC, online fund transfer, e-contract notes, digital portfolio reports — everything works from your phone. No branch visits, no paperwork.

6. Equal treatment regardless of account size

At a traditional broker, a ₹5,000 investor and a ₹50 lakh investor get very different attention. At a discount broker, both get the same platform, the same pricing, and the same execution speed. It has genuinely democratised investing in India.

7. Easy scaling for active traders

Intraday and F&O traders may place dozens of orders daily. Percentage-based brokerage makes active trading nearly unviable; flat-fee pricing makes it possible to trade professionally as an individual.

How Brokerage Charges Work

Brokerage is only one line on your contract note. To truly understand your trading cost, you need to know every component. Here is the full breakdown.

📌 Note: Statutory rates below reflect commonly applicable rates and are subject to change by the government, SEBI, and exchanges. Always verify current rates on the official NSE, BSE, and broker charge sheets before trading.

The anatomy of a trade’s cost

ChargeWho Levies ItWhat It Is
BrokerageYour brokerThe broker’s fee per executed order

Exchange transaction chargesNSE/BSE/MCXFee for using the exchange’s infrastructure

GSTGovernment of India18% on brokerage + exchange transaction charges
Stamp dutyState/CentralCharged on the buy side, rate varies by segment
DP chargesDepository + brokerCharged when shares leave your demat account (sell side of delivery)

1. Equity Delivery

Delivery means you buy shares and hold them beyond the trading day — they are “delivered” to your demat account.

  • Brokerage: Many discount brokers charge zero or a small flat fee for delivery. This is the cheapest way to build long-term wealth.
  • STT: Applies on both buy and sell for delivery trades.
  • DP charges: Applied when you sell — a flat fee per scrip per day, regardless of quantity.

Practical takeaway: For long-term investors, STT and DP charges usually exceed brokerage at a discount broker. Your biggest cost lever is choosing a broker with zero or minimal delivery brokerage.

2. Equity Intraday

Intraday means buying and selling the same stock within the same trading session — positions are squared off before market close.

  • Brokerage: Typically flat ₹20 or a small percentage (like 0.03%–0.05%), whichever is lower, per executed order. Charged on both legs (buy and sell).
  • STT: Lower than delivery, and applied only on the sell side.
  • Why cost matters more here: Intraday profits come from small price moves. If your total round-trip cost is ₹60 on a trade, the stock must move enough to cover ₹60 before you earn anything. High brokerage silently kills intraday strategies.

3. Futures

  • Brokerage: Flat per order (commonly ₹20 or lower) at discount brokers, versus percentage-based at traditional brokers.
  • STT: Applied on the sell side on the contract value.
  • Margins: You trade on exchange-mandated SPAN + exposure margins. Use a margin calculator before entering positions.

4. Options

  • Brokerage: Flat per order (commonly ₹20). Note: percentage-based brokers historically charged per lot, which made multi-lot option trades extremely expensive — flat pricing changed the economics of options trading in India.
  • STT: Charged on the premium on the sell side; higher rate applies if in-the-money options are exercised, which is why most traders square off before expiry.
  • Hidden trap: Brokerage may also apply on expired, exercised, and assigned contracts at some brokers. Read the fine print.

5. Commodity (MCX)

  • Brokerage: Flat per order at discount brokers.
  • CTT: Commodities Transaction Tax applies on the sell side for non-agri commodities.
  • Who it’s for: Traders in gold, silver, crude oil, natural gas, and base metals. Ensure your broker holds MCX membership — not all do. (Ashlar Securities is a member of MCX, member code 56815.)

6. Currency Derivatives

  • Brokerage: Flat per order; typically the cheapest segment to trade.
  • No STT: Currency derivatives are exempt from STT, which keeps total costs very low.
  • Note: SEBI/RBI rules require underlying forex exposure for certain currency positions — check current regulations before trading.

Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Discount Broker

Price gets the headlines, but the cheapest broker is not automatically the best broker. Use this framework.

1. Regulatory standing

Verify the SEBI registration number and exchange memberships on the broker’s website footer — legitimate brokers display them prominently. Cross-check on SEBI’s registered intermediaries list. Look up the broker’s complaint ratio published monthly by NSE and BSE (complaints received vs active clients).

2. Total cost of ownership — not just brokerage

Add up: account opening fee + AMC + delivery brokerage + intraday/F&O brokerage + DP charges + payment gateway fees + call-and-trade charges + platform subscription fees. A broker with ₹0 brokerage but a ₹500 monthly platform fee may cost more than a ₹20-per-order broker, depending on your volume.

3. Platform stability

The best price means nothing if the app freezes on budget day or expiry day. Check user reviews specifically about high-volatility sessions. Test the platform with small trades before committing serious capital.

4. Segment coverage

Do you need commodities (MCX)? Currency? IPO applications via UPI? Mutual funds? Margin Trading Facility? Not every discount broker offers every segment. List your needs first.

5. Customer support quality

Discount brokers save money on support — some to a fault. Check: Is there a phone line with humans? What are the support hours? How fast are fund-withdrawal queries resolved? Support quality only matters on the day something goes wrong, and that’s exactly when it matters enormously.

6. Fund transfer and payout speed

How quickly can you add funds (UPI should be instant and free)? How quickly are withdrawal requests processed? SEBI regulates payout timelines, but operational speed varies between brokers.

7. Tools and research

Charting quality, screeners, option chain analytics, margin calculators, API access for algo trading — evaluate against your actual usage, not aspirations.

8. Track record and stability

How long has the broker been operating? A broker that has survived multiple market cycles has proven operational resilience. Newer isn’t automatically riskier, but longevity is a genuine signal.

Who Should Choose a Discount Broker?

Self-directed beginners. If you’re willing to learn the basics yourself — and resources like free investor education content make that easier than ever — a discount broker gives you the cheapest possible start. Small portfolios especially cannot afford percentage-based fees.

SIP and long-term investors. If your strategy is “buy quality, hold for years,” you don’t need daily advice. You need zero/low delivery brokerage and a reliable demat account. Discount brokers are practically built for you.

Intraday traders. Cost per trade is a direct input to your profitability. Flat-fee brokerage is non-negotiable for intraday viability.

F&O traders. Options traders placing multi-leg strategies (spreads, straddles, iron condors) place four or more orders per strategy. Flat pricing makes these strategies economical.

Students and young professionals. Low capital, high digital comfort, long investment horizon — the perfect discount broking profile.

Experienced investors switching from full-service brokers. If you’ve stopped reading your broker’s research reports and make your own decisions anyway, you’re paying full-service prices for discount-service usage. Switching is straightforward — your existing holdings can be transferred to your new demat account.

Cost-conscious HNIs. Percentage brokerage punishes large trade sizes the most. A ₹50 lakh delivery trade at 0.3% costs ₹15,000 in brokerage; at a flat-fee discount broker, it can cost ₹0–₹20. High-net-worth investors who do their own research have the strongest financial case of all for discount broking.

Who Should Avoid Discount Brokers?

Honesty builds trust, so here it is: discount brokers are not for everyone.

Investors who need hand-holding. If you will not research stocks yourself and genuinely want someone to advise you, an execution-only platform leaves you directionless. Consider a full-service broker or, better, a fee-only SEBI-Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) paired with a discount broker.

People uncomfortable with technology. If apps and online forms feel stressful, a broker with branch and offline support will serve you better — though note that some brokers (including Ashlar Securities) offer both online platforms and human support, bridging this gap.

Investors who need complex services. Portfolio Management Services, estate planning, offline share transmission assistance, NRI desk services — these often need a full-service relationship.

Anyone expecting advice from a discount broker. The most dangerous middle ground: opening a discount account, getting no guidance, then trading on tips from Telegram channels or social media “gurus.” That path loses money. If you won’t learn, pay a registered professional for advice — never trade on unverified tips.

Top Features Every Modern Discount Broker Should Offer

Use this as your minimum bar in 2026. If a broker misses several of these, keep looking.

  1. Free or fast online account opening with Aadhaar eKYC and digital signature — completed in minutes, not days.
  2. A fast, stable trading app for Android and iOS with real-time quotes, advanced charts (candlesticks, indicators), and one-tap order placement.
  3. A full web trading platform — because serious analysis needs a big screen.
  4. A desktop terminal for professional traders who want speed and multi-window layouts.
  5. Transparent, published pricing — a complete charges page and a brokerage calculator so you can compute costs before trading.
  6. Margin calculators — SPAN + exposure margin for F&O and MCX positions, updated to exchange requirements.
  7. UPI-based instant fund transfer and reliable, timely payouts.
  8. IPO applications via UPI from the app.
  9. Multiple order types — market, limit, stop-loss, SL-M, bracket/cover orders, AMO (after-market orders).
  10. Multi-segment access — NSE, BSE cash and derivatives; MCX commodities; currency derivatives; mutual funds.
  11. Margin Trading Facility (MTF) with clearly disclosed interest rates, for leveraged delivery positions under SEBI’s framework.
  12. e-Contract notes, P&L reports, and tax reports — clean documentation for filing returns.
  13. Real human support — phone and email support with reasonable response times, plus a published escalation matrix as required by regulations.
  14. Strong security — two-factor authentication, biometric app login, and SEBI-mandated safeguards on client funds and securities.
  15. Investor education — glossaries, tutorials, and market-basics content that helps you become self-sufficient.

How to Open a Discount Trading Account (Step-by-Step)

Opening a low brokerage trading account online in India is now a 10–15 minute process. Here’s exactly what happens, structured for anyone doing it for the first time.

  1. Keep your documents ready. PAN card, Aadhaar (with mobile number linked — this is essential for eKYC OTPs), and a bank proof (cancelled cheque or statement). See the full list in the next section.
  2. Start the online application. Visit the broker’s website or app — for example, the account opening page on ashlarindia.com — and enter your mobile number and email. Both get verified via OTP.
  3. Complete Aadhaar eKYC. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar details. Your identity and address are verified digitally through the UIDAI/DigiLocker framework. No photocopies, no notarisation.
  4. Add bank details. Enter your bank account number and IFSC. Some brokers verify this with a penny-drop (a ₹1 test credit). This bank account becomes your primary channel for adding and withdrawing funds — a SEBI safeguard ensuring money only moves between your own accounts.
  5. Complete IPV (In-Person Verification). Regulations require identity verification — done online via a short selfie video or webcam capture. Takes under a minute.
  6. eSign the application. Review the filled form, tariff sheet, and rights-and-obligations documents, then eSign with an Aadhaar OTP. Reading the tariff sheet takes two minutes and prevents 90% of future billing surprises.
  7. Activation. The broker processes your application and your account credentials arrive by email/SMS, typically within a few hours to 1–2 working days. Your demat account is opened with a depository (CDSL or NSDL), and you can log in, add funds via UPI, and place your first trade.
💡 Pro tip for first-timers: Make your first trade a small delivery buy of a liquid large-cap stock. It teaches you the full cycle — order, execution, contract note, T+1 settlement, holdings view — with minimal risk.

Documents Required

DocumentPurposeNotes
PAN CardIdentity & tax identificationMandatory for all investors, no exceptions
Aadhaar CardIdentity + address for eKYCMobile number must be linked to Aadhaar
Bank ProofLinking your bank accountCancelled cheque, passbook page, or statement showing name, account no., IFSC
SignatureRecords & verificationSigned on white paper, photographed/scanned
PhotographAccount recordsUsually captured live during IPV
Income ProofOnly for F&O/derivativesAny one: salary slip, 6-month bank statement, ITR acknowledgement, Form 16, demat holdings statement, net worth certificate

Why income proof for F&O? SEBI requires brokers to verify that derivatives clients have the financial capacity for leveraged products. It’s investor protection, not bureaucracy — derivatives can produce losses exceeding your deposit, and the regulator wants evidence you can bear that risk.

For NRIs: Additional documents apply (passport, visa/OCI, overseas address proof, PIS letter where applicable). Requirements differ enough that you should contact the broker’s support before starting.

How to Save Brokerage Charges

Even at a discount broker, costs can be optimised further. Here’s how experienced traders keep their cost ratio down.

1. Match your broker plan to your trading pattern. If a broker offers both per-order and fixed monthly plans, do the math: a fixed monthly plan wins when your order count is high; per-order pricing wins for occasional traders. Recalculate whenever your trading frequency changes.

2. Prefer delivery for long-term positions. Delivery brokerage at discount brokers is zero or minimal. Don’t take intraday or futures positions for ideas you actually want to hold — you’ll pay brokerage on both legs plus rollover costs.

3. Reduce order count without reducing conviction. Ten small orders of ₹10,000 cost ten brokerage fees; one order of ₹1 lakh costs one. Batch your entries where your strategy allows. (For genuine SIP-style rupee-cost averaging, the diversification benefit usually outweighs the small extra brokerage — this tip is for traders, not SIP investors.)

4. Watch the non-brokerage charges. STT on options exercise, physical settlement charges on stock F&O, call-and-trade fees, RMS square-off penalties (often ₹20–₹50 + GST per position), payment gateway fees — these bite harder than brokerage if you’re careless. Square off your own intraday positions before the broker’s auto square-off deadline.

5. Use limit orders thoughtfully. This saves on impact cost (the hidden cost of crossing the bid-ask spread), which for large orders in less-liquid stocks often exceeds all explicit charges combined.

6. Consolidate demat accounts. Multiple demat accounts mean multiple AMCs. Unless you need separation (e.g., trading vs long-term holdings), consolidate. Also check if you qualify as a Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) holder — SEBI mandates reduced/zero AMC for small investors below specified holding values.

7. Audit your contract notes quarterly. Fifteen minutes every three months. Verify charges match the published tariff. Compute your total annual cost as a percentage of portfolio — if trading costs exceed 1–2% of capital per year, your strategy or your broker needs rethinking.

HabitTypical Annual Saving (Active Trader)
Right plan selection₹2,000–₹15,000
Avoiding RMS auto square-off₹500–₹5,000
Order batching₹1,000–₹10,000
BSDA/AMC optimisation₹300–₹1,000
Limit orders (impact cost)Highly variable, often the largest

Common Mistakes Investors Make

  1. Choosing a broker on brokerage alone. Zero brokerage with an unstable platform, slow payouts, or absent support is expensive. Total cost and total experience matter.
  2. Not reading the tariff sheet before eSigning. You legally agreed to every charge on that sheet. Two minutes of reading prevents most billing disputes.
  3. Confusing a discount broker with an advisor. Your broker executes; it doesn’t (and legally shouldn’t, without RIA registration) tell you what to buy. Never treat app notifications or “trending stocks” lists as advice.
  4. Overtrading because it’s cheap. Cheap brokerage is a tool, not an invitation. Studies of retail trading consistently show that higher trading frequency correlates with lower returns for most individuals. The flat fee saves you money only if your strategy was worth executing in the first place.
  5. Jumping into F&O without understanding leverage. SEBI’s own research has found that the large majority of individual F&O traders lose money. Derivatives are risk-transfer instruments, not lottery tickets. Learn, paper-trade, start small — or stay in delivery.
  6. Ignoring the complaint ratio and regulatory record. NSE and BSE publish broker-wise complaint data. Check it. Also confirm the broker’s SEBI registration is active.
  7. Keeping large idle funds in the trading account. Move unused funds back to your bank. Client funds have SEBI-mandated protections (including quarterly/monthly running account settlement), but idle money earns you nothing in a trading ledger.
  8. Ignoring email from your broker. Contract notes, margin shortfall alerts, policy changes, running account settlements — these emails are legally significant. Read them.
  9. Sharing credentials or trading on someone else’s advice via your account. Never share your password or OTP. Unauthorized trading complaints become nearly impossible to prove if you shared credentials. Beware fraud calls claiming to be from any broker asking for OTPs or “charges” to release holdings — legitimate brokers never do this.
  10. Not nominating. Add a nominee to your demat account. It costs nothing and saves your family months of legal process. SEBI has repeatedly extended nomination compliance deadlines because so many investors skip this.

Latest Industry Trends

The discount model has become the default. Discount brokers now serve the majority of India’s active retail investors — a complete inversion of the market a decade ago. Even traditional full-service brokers have launched flat-fee plans in response.

True-to-label charges. SEBI’s “true-to-label” framework requires brokers to pass exchange charges to clients at actual rates rather than earning margins on them — increasing transparency across the industry and nudging some brokers to restructure pricing.

Upfront and tighter margin norms in F&O. Peak margin rules, and SEBI’s ongoing measures to cool speculative index-options activity (including changes to weekly expiries and lot sizes), have reshaped derivatives trading economics. Expect continued regulatory evolution aimed at protecting retail traders.

T+1 settlement, moving toward faster settlement. India settles equities on T+1 — among the fastest in the world — and the ecosystem has been piloting even faster optional settlement. Faster settlement means quicker access to your funds and shares.

UPI-based IPO applications and ASBA everywhere. Applying for IPOs from a trading app in two minutes has brought record retail participation to primary markets.

Demat account growth. India’s total demat accounts (across CDSL and NSDL) have grown explosively — crossing well past the 15-crore mark — driven overwhelmingly by digital-first discount broking onboarding.

Algo and API access for retail. Exchange-approved frameworks for retail algorithmic trading are maturing, with brokers offering APIs under regulated conditions.

AI-assisted tools. Screeners, sentiment dashboards, and analytics assistants are becoming standard platform features — useful for research efficiency, but no substitute for judgment.

The direction is clear: costs keep falling, transparency keeps rising, and regulation keeps tightening in favour of the retail investor. Choosing a broker that is compliant, technology-driven, and transparent puts you on the right side of every one of these trends.

* Ashlar Capital offers multiple brokerage plans (per-order and fixed-fee structures). See the current plan details and use the brokerage calculator at ashlarindia.com for exact applicable rates.
** Delivery charge structures at several brokers have changed multiple times recently; verify current rates.

How to read this table: Statutory charges (STT, GST, stamp duty, exchange fees) are identical everywhere — only brokerage, AMC, platform, and service differ. The right broker is the one whose pricing structure matches your trading frequency and whose platform and support match your comfort level.

Why Choose Ashlar Securities

You’ve read the framework. Now let’s apply it honestly to Ashlar Securities — and you can verify every claim yourself before opening an account.

Regulated, established, verifiable

Ashlar Securities Pvt. Ltd. is a SEBI-registered stockbroker (Registration No. INZ000203739) and a member of the NSE (13718), BSE (3302), and MCX (56815). The group has operated in Indian financial markets for over two decades, through multiple bull and bear cycles. The registration details are published right on the website footer — check them against SEBI’s records, exactly as this guide recommends for any broker.

Genuinely low, transparent brokerage

Ashlar’s discount broking plans are built around low flat per-order pricing and fixed-fee structures, so you can pick the model that matches your trading frequency — occasional investor or high-volume trader. No hidden charges: the brokerage on your contract note matches the published tariff, and you can compute your exact cost on any trade using the free brokerage calculator before you place it.

Platforms for every kind of trader

  • Ashlar Neo mobile app — fast execution, 100+ indicators, multiple chart types, all order types (CNC, MIS, NRML, CO, BO, AMO), dark mode, and a lightweight footprint.
  • Web trading platform — trade from any browser, no installation.
  • Desktop terminal — full-featured for professional multi-screen trading.

Everything is built for speed and stability — including on high-volatility sessions like budget day and expiry, when platform reliability matters most.

Full market access in one account

Equity and F&O on NSE and BSE, commodities on MCX, currency derivatives, IPO applications via UPI, mutual funds, Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) on NSE, bonds, corporate FDs, and insurance solutions. One account, the entire Indian market.

Tools that do real work

Brokerage calculator, SPAN margin calculator for F&O and MCX, SIP and lumpsum calculators, market glossary, and structured investor education content — the resources you need to stay self-sufficient, free on the website.

MTF and leverage, clearly explained

A straightforward Margin Trading Facility for holding leveraged delivery positions, with terms disclosed upfront — no confusing fine print.

Support with actual humans

Here’s where Ashlar differs from the typical discount broker: dedicated customer support and relationship assistance, available through the trading week. Fast online platforms plus someone to call when you need help — the hybrid that most pure discount brokers don’t offer. A published escalation matrix ensures your complaint always has a next step.

Secure and compliant by design

Two-factor authentication, SEBI-compliant client fund handling, depository-held securities, and proactive fraud-awareness communication (Ashlar never asks for OTPs, passwords, or “charges to release holdings” — no legitimate broker does).

Fast, easy onboarding

Free demat account opening, fully online with Aadhaar eKYC, completed in about 10 minutes — exactly the process described step-by-step earlier in this guide.

In short: low flat brokerage, transparent pricing, multi-segment access, serious trading platforms, and human support — verified by SEBI registration you can check yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Basics

1. What is a discount broker in simple words?

A discount broker is an online stockbroker that charges a small flat fee (usually ₹0–₹20 per order) to execute your trades, instead of a percentage of your trade value. You make your own investment decisions; the broker provides the platform and execution.

2. Which is the best discount broker in India?

There is no single “best” for everyone — it depends on your trading style. Active traders should prioritise low flat brokerage and platform stability; beginners should prioritise ease of use and support; long-term investors should prioritise zero/low delivery charges and AMC. Use the selection checklist in this guide. Ashlar Securities is a strong fit if you want discount pricing combined with human customer support and multi-segment access.

3. Are discount brokers safe in India?

Yes, provided they are SEBI-registered and exchange members. Your shares are held with depositories (CDSL/NSDL), not with the broker, and client funds are protected by SEBI’s segregation and settlement rules. Always verify a broker’s registration number before opening an account.

4. What is the cheapest discount broker in India?

Several brokers advertise zero delivery brokerage and ₹20 (or lower) per order for intraday/F&O. The truly “cheapest” broker depends on your trade frequency and segments — compare total annual cost (brokerage + AMC + DP charges + other fees) using each broker’s calculator, not just headline rates.

5. Do discount brokers provide tips or advice?

No. Discount brokers are execution-only platforms. Some provide research tools, screeners, and educational content, but not personalised advice. For advice, consult a SEBI-Registered Investment Adviser.

6. What is a zero brokerage trading account?

An account where the broker charges no brokerage on certain segments — most commonly equity delivery, and in some plans, broader segments. Note that statutory charges (STT, GST, stamp duty, exchange fees) always apply; “zero brokerage” never means zero cost.

7. Is a demat account and trading account the same thing?

No. A trading account places orders on the exchange; a demat account holds your shares electronically with CDSL or NSDL. Brokers open both together as a 2-in-1 account.

8. What is SEBI’s role in protecting me?

SEBI regulates brokers’ conduct: client fund segregation, running account settlements, margin rules, complaint redressal (SCORES platform), broker audits, and investor grievance mechanisms. It also mandates risk disclosures — for example, on the risks of F&O trading.

Charges

9. What are brokerage charges?

The fee your broker charges for executing an order. At discount brokers, it’s a flat amount per executed order; at full-service brokers, typically a percentage of trade value.

10. What charges apply besides brokerage?

STT/CTT, exchange transaction charges, SEBI turnover fees, 18% GST (on brokerage + exchange charges), stamp duty (buy side), and DP charges (when you sell delivery holdings). These apply at every broker.

11. What are AMC charges?

Annual Maintenance Charges for your demat account, typically ₹0–₹400 per year at discount brokers. Under SEBI’s BSDA rules, small investors below specified holding values get reduced or zero AMC.

12. What are DP charges?

A flat fee (commonly ₹10–₹25 + GST per scrip per day) charged when shares are debited from your demat account — i.e., when you sell delivery holdings. Charged by the depository participant, regardless of quantity sold.

13. Why did I pay charges even on a loss-making trade?

Statutory charges and brokerage apply on execution, not on outcome. Every trade — profitable or not — incurs them. This is precisely why cost control matters.

14. Is GST applicable on brokerage?

Yes, 18% GST applies on brokerage and on exchange transaction charges.

15. What is STT?

Securities Transaction Tax — a central government tax on the value of securities transactions. Rates differ by segment: delivery (both sides), intraday (sell side), futures (sell side), and options (on premium, sell side; higher on exercise).

16. Can brokerage be negotiated?

At discount brokers, generally no — pricing is standardised and published, which is a feature, not a bug. At full-service brokers, high-volume clients often negotiate.

17. How do I calculate my exact cost before trading?

Use the broker’s brokerage calculator. Enter segment, buy price, sell price, and quantity; it shows brokerage, all statutory charges, breakeven, and net P&L. Ashlar provides one free on its website.

18. Are there charges for cancelling or modifying an order?

Typically no — brokerage applies only on executed orders. Verify in the tariff sheet.

Account Opening

19. How long does it take to open a discount trading account?

The application takes 10–15 minutes online. Activation typically happens within a few hours to 1–2 working days.

20. What documents do I need?

PAN, Aadhaar (mobile-linked), and bank proof. Income proof is additionally required only for the F&O segment. See the documents table in this guide.

21. Can I open a demat account without income proof?

Yes — for equity delivery and mutual funds. Income proof is required only to activate derivatives (F&O) trading.

22. Is online account opening safe?

Yes. Aadhaar eKYC, IPV, and eSign are regulator-approved processes. Ensure you’re on the broker’s official website (check the URL) and never share OTPs with callers.

23. Can students open a trading account?

Yes, anyone 18+ with a PAN, Aadhaar, and bank account can. Minors can have demat accounts operated by guardians for holdings, with trading restrictions.

24. Can I have accounts with multiple brokers?

Yes, there’s no limit. Many traders keep one account for long-term holdings and another for active trading. Remember each account may carry its own AMC.

25. How do I switch from my current broker to a new one?

Open the new account, then transfer holdings via the depositories’ online transfer facilities (CDSL “Easiest” / NSDL equivalent) or an offline DIS slip, then close the old account to stop its AMC. Your shares are never at risk during a transfer — they simply move between demat accounts in your name.

26. Do NRIs need a different process?

Yes — NRIs need NRE/NRO bank accounts, and PIS permissions where applicable, with extra documentation. Contact the broker’s support before applying.

Trading

27. What is the difference between delivery and intraday?

Delivery: you buy shares and hold them beyond the day; they’re credited to your demat account. Intraday: you buy and sell within the same session; no delivery happens. Charges, margin rules, and risk differ significantly (see the comparison table above).

28. What is margin trading?

Trading with borrowed funds. Intraday margin lets you take larger same-day positions; Margin Trading Facility (MTF) lets you carry leveraged delivery positions by paying interest. Leverage amplifies both profits and losses — understand the costs and risks first.

29. Can I trade commodities with a discount broker?

Only if the broker is an MCX member. Ashlar Securities holds MCX membership (56815), so gold, silver, crude oil, and other commodities are tradeable in the same account.

30. Can I apply for IPOs through a discount broker?

Most modern discount brokers, including Ashlar, support UPI-based IPO applications directly from the app/web platform.

31. What happens if my broker’s platform goes down during market hours?

Reputable brokers provide a call-and-trade backup line for emergencies (charges may apply per order). This is why support quality belongs in your broker selection criteria. Keep positions sized so a temporary outage isn’t catastrophic, and know your broker’s backup process before you need it.

32. What is auto square-off and why was I charged for it?

If you don’t close an intraday (MIS) position before the broker’s cutoff time, the RMS closes it for you and levies a fee (often ₹20–₹50 + GST). Close your own positions on time to avoid it.

33. What are AMO orders?

After-Market Orders — orders placed outside market hours that queue for execution at the next session’s open. Useful for people who can’t watch markets during the day.

34. Is algo trading allowed for retail traders?

Yes, within exchange-approved frameworks. Brokers offering APIs must comply with regulatory conditions. If you’re interested, check the broker’s API documentation and applicable charges.

Safety & Regulation

35. What happens to my shares if my broker shuts down?

Your shares sit in your demat account with CDSL or NSDL — not with the broker. Even if a broker fails, holdings remain yours and can be moved to another broker. Funds lying with the broker are protected by SEBI’s client-segregation rules and, in extreme cases, investor protection funds (subject to limits and process).

36. How do I check a broker’s complaint record?

NSE and BSE publish monthly complaint statistics against each member broker on their websites. You can also check SEBI’s SCORES platform for grievance history and file complaints there if needed.

37. How do I verify a broker is SEBI-registered?

Find the registration number (format: INZ…) on the broker’s website footer, then match it on SEBI’s “Registered Intermediaries” search. Ashlar Securities’ number is INZ000203739 — verify it yourself.

38. What is the risk disclosure for F&O trading?

SEBI mandates that brokers display risk disclosures for derivatives, reflecting its research finding that most individual F&O traders lose money. Take that disclosure seriously — it’s data, not legal boilerplate.

39. Someone called claiming I have shares stuck and must pay charges to release them. Is it real?

No — it’s a common fraud. No broker, depository, or exchange asks for payments, OTPs, or passwords over calls to “release” holdings. Verify anything suspicious through the broker’s official website and customer care only, and report fraud attempts.

40. What is a contract note and why does it matter?

The legal record of every trade — prices, quantities, and each charge, sent to your email daily when you trade. It’s your proof in any dispute and your tool for auditing costs. Read it, at least occasionally.

41. What is T+1 settlement?

Trades settle one working day after execution: sell on Monday, funds are available Tuesday; buy on Monday, shares credit Tuesday. India is among the fastest-settling major markets in the world.

42. Do I pay tax on trading profits?

Yes. Delivery gains attract capital gains tax (short-term or long-term based on holding period); intraday profits are speculative business income; F&O profits are non-speculative business income. Your broker’s tax P&L report simplifies filing. Consult a CA for specifics — this guide is educational, not tax advice.

Expert Tips

  1. Treat brokerage as a performance metric. Professionals track cost as a percentage of capital annually. Retail traders rarely do — start, and you’ll instantly trade more thoughtfully.
  2. Test any broker with one month of small trades before moving serious capital. Platform stability, payout speed, and support responsiveness only reveal themselves in use.
  3. Automate the boring, decide the important. Use price alerts, GTT/limit orders, and SIPs so you act on plan rather than emotion — but never automate the decision itself onto a tip channel or a “signal” service.
  4. Keep a separation between investing and trading. Ideally different strategies with different capital, even if in the same account. The fastest way to lose long-term wealth is to “trade” your retirement portfolio.
  5. Read your broker’s risk disclosures once, fully. Especially for F&O. The regulator wrote them from real loss data.
  6. When in doubt about advice, check registration. Anyone charging for stock advice must be a SEBI-Registered Investment Adviser or Research Analyst. No registration = no credibility, whatever their follower count.
  7. Review your broker relationship annually. Charges change, platforms improve, your needs evolve. Switching brokers is easy in 2026 — loyalty should be earned every year.

Conclusion

The rise of the discount broker is one of the best things to happen to the Indian retail investor. Costs that once ate 0.5% of every trade are now flat, tiny, and transparent. Account opening that took weeks now takes minutes. And the conflict of interest baked into commission-driven advice has been engineered out of the model.

But “discount” only describes the price — not the quality you should demand. The best discount broker in India, for you, is the one that is SEBI-registered and verifiable, prices transparently, runs a platform that doesn’t blink on expiry day, gives you access to every segment you trade, and picks up the phone when something goes wrong.

Measure every broker against that standard. We’re confident about where Ashlar Securities lands: two decades of market presence, SEBI registration you can verify in thirty seconds, genuinely low flat brokerage, platforms across mobile, web, and desktop, full access to NSE, BSE, and MCX, and real human support — the rare combination of discount pricing with full-service care.

SEBI-registered.

  1. Digital onboarding.

Value-added subscriptionsAdvanced tools, data feeds, API access, या premium plans।

6. Account size

Brokerage Charges

1. Equity Delivery

2. Equity Intraday

3. Futures

4. Options

5. Commodity (MCX)

6. Currency Derivatives

1. Regulatory

जोड़ें: account opening fee + AMC + delivery brokerage + intraday/F&O brokerage + DP charges + payment gateway fees + call-and-trade charges + platform subscription fees।

3. Platform

4. Segment coverage

Currency? UPI के ज़रिए IPO applications? Mutual funds? Margin Trading Facility?

5. Customer support

8. Track record

Intraday traders।

F&O traders।

  2. एक तेज़, स्थिर trading app Android और iOS के लिए real-time quotes, advanced charts (candlesticks, indicators), और one-tap order placement के साथ।
  9. कई order types — market, limit, stop-loss, SL-M, bracket/cover orders, AMO (after-market orders)।
  10. Multi-segment पहुँच — NSE, BSE cash और derivatives; MCX commodities; currency derivatives; mutual funds।

Brokerage

Options exercise पर STT, stock F&O पर physical settlement charges, call-and-trade fees, RMS square-off penalties (अक्सर ₹20–₹50 + GST प्रति position), payment gateway fees — अगर आप लापरवाह हैं तो ये brokerage से ज़्यादा काटते हैं। broker की auto square-off समय-सीमा से पहले अपनी intraday positions खुद square off करें।

(Active Trader)
सही plan चुनाव₹2,000–₹15,000
RMS auto square-off से बचना₹500–₹5,000
Order batching₹1,000–₹10,000
BSDA/AMC
Limit orders (impact cost)

Industry Trends

Platforms

  • Desktop terminal — professional multi-screen trading

Tools

Support

6. Zero brokerage trading account

9. Brokerage

Account Opening

Trading

28. Margin trading

Intraday margin आपको बड़ी same-day positions लेने देता है; Margin Trading Facility (MTF) आपको ब्याज देकर leveraged delivery positions carry करने देता है।

33. AMO orders

40. Contract note

41. T+1 settlement
